Game Preview
The Boston Red Sox could be finding their stride at an unexpected location, as they look to extend their Camden Yards success on Sunday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Red Sox aim for a third consecutive win at Camden Yards after a 5-1 triumph on Saturday night, following a weather delay. With the victory, Boston remains 2 1/2 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the final wild card spot and has moved three games ahead of the Seattle Mariners.
Center fielder Jarren Duran delivered a crucial two-run single in the seventh inning, and the bullpen secured the win with a combined five-hitter. Duran, along with David Hamilton, became the first Red Sox pair since 1910 to each steal 30 or more bases in a single season.
"Our team is so athletic, and we can really put pressure on the defense," Duran said.
Baltimore, now 2-3 on its homestand, finds a bright spot in shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who has hit three home runs in his last four games. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde expressed confidence in Henderson’s performance at the plate.
Catch Adley Rutschman, dealing with a back issue, was used as a pinch hitter and then returned to catching duties on Saturday night. Hyde noted Rutschman’s back is improving.
The Red Sox are also getting key players back at the right moment. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill, recently recovered from a leg infection, contributed with an RBI on Saturday. His return led to Nick Sogard being sent back to Triple-A Worcester.
For the series finale, the Red Sox will start right-hander Kutter Crawford (8-9, 4.21 ERA), aiming for his third win in four August starts. Crawford is 0-1 in two starts against the Orioles this season but did pitch five scoreless innings in their first matchup.
On the other side, the Orioles will now have right-hander Albert Suarez (5-4, 3.39 ERA) as their starter for Sunday, after his start was moved from Saturday. Suarez has faced Boston only twice in his career, giving up eight runs (seven earned) over 9 1/3 innings in those appearances.
The Orioles are adjusting their bullpen after Bryan Baker’s demotion to Triple-A Norfolk, and reliever Burch Smith, having pitched in three straight games, may be rested on Sunday.
