Game Preview

The Baltimore Orioles are facing pitching concerns at an inopportune moment, having conceded 21 runs in their last two losses.

The Orioles aim to regain their footing as they host the Boston Red Sox for their next game on Saturday. The series is currently tied 1-1 following Boston’s 12-10 win on Friday, which featured four Red Sox home runs.

Boston’s offense was potent, overpowering Orioles ace Corbin Burnes with eight runs and ten hits in just four innings.

“We knew they’d be aggressive against him,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde commented.

On the other hand, Boston’s pitching wasn’t flawless either. “We had to work hard for every out,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, highlighting the challenge of securing the win.

Cora was pleased with the offensive output, noting, “Our lineup performed well.”

Baltimore’s pitching situation is now in flux. Originally, right-hander Albert Suarez was set to start Saturday, but Hyde indicated a change due to fatigue concerns. As a result, rookie left-hander Cade Povich (1-5, 6.27 ERA) will take the mound. Povich has struggled recently, going 0-3 in July with 17 runs allowed in 10 2/3 innings.

The Orioles are also dealing with injury concerns. Catcher Adley Rutschman was scratched from the lineup on Friday due to lower-back discomfort. He’s listed as day-to-day, with Hyde noting, “We’ll evaluate him as we go.”

Rutschman has been struggling at the plate recently, going 3-for-12 in his last four games.

In contrast, rookie Jackson Holliday had a standout performance on Friday, recording his first four-hit game in the majors.

For Boston, right-hander Brayan Bello (10-5, 4.97 ERA) will start on Saturday. Bello has been solid in his recent outings, with the Red Sox winning the last four games he pitched. His previous performance against the Orioles included a May 28 victory, where he allowed three runs in five innings.

The Red Sox made a roster move on Friday, activating first baseman Triston Casas, who went 1-for-5 with a run scored. Consequently, Dominic Smith was designated for assignment. “It was a tough decision, but we had to make the change,” Cora said.
