Game Preview
The Boston Red Sox overcame a late four-run deficit to clinch an extra-inning win in Detroit on Friday, and they’re set to face the Tigers once more on Saturday in the second game of their three-game set.
Ceddanne Rafaela’s two-run homer in the 10th inning helped Boston secure a 7-5 victory, rebounding from a shutout loss to Toronto the previous night.
Manager Alex Cora reflected on the game’s challenges, saying, "It was a tough game, arriving late and playing in the heat and humidity. Despite losing the lead late, we managed to secure the win."
Jarren Duran was another key player for Boston, hitting a home run and two doubles in the win. "Duran really sparks our lineup," Cora noted.
Detroit will send Tarik Skubal, a frontrunner for the AL Cy Young Award, to the mound. Skubal (15-4, 2.58 ERA) aims to recover from a rare short stint last Saturday where he surrendered three runs over five innings against the Chicago White Sox. Despite the setback, he had performed strongly in his prior three starts.
Skubal expressed some concerns over the baseballs used in his last outing, noting they felt different, though he dismissed this as an excuse. "You have to adapt and overcome these challenges," he said. Skubal holds a 1-2 record with a 6.00 ERA in his career starts against Boston.
Boston’s Nick Pivetta (5-9, 4.61 ERA) will oppose Skubal. Since mid-June, Pivetta has claimed only one win. He last pitched in relief during a game continuation against Toronto, where he allowed three runs over six innings and struck out 10 but was saddled with the loss.
Pivetta has struggled with home runs, conceding two in each of his last five starts. In a previous matchup against the Tigers this May, he allowed two runs and recorded nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
