Game Preview
Gerrit Cole’s first two starts following an extensive rehab for an elbow injury included some unusual difficulties.
In his third start, he showed improvement, and the struggling Yankees are hoping for continued progress from their ace when he faces the Boston Red Sox on Saturday afternoon.
Cole (1-1, 6.23 ERA) will take the mound after the Yankees dropped to 4-14 in their last 18 games with a 5-3 loss on Friday. New York was one strike away from a win but saw their losing streak extend to four games when Masataka Yoshida hit a tying homer off Clay Holmes, and rookie Ceddanne Rafaela hit a go-ahead homer to start the 10th inning off Tommy Kahnle.
"It’s a difficult time," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after New York’s fifth straight home loss. "We have to dig deep, turn around quickly for tomorrow, and see what we’re made of."
After three rehab starts following his spring training injury, Cole returned and pitched four-plus innings, throwing 62 pitches in a no-decision against the Baltimore Orioles on June 19. He then threw 72 pitches against the New York Mets on June 25, allowing six runs on seven hits, including four homers, without striking out anyone in four innings of a 9-7 loss.
