Game Preview
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy is eager for a turnaround as his team faces the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series starting Friday night in Arlington. Texas has struggled recently, suffering a 10-1 defeat to St. Louis on Wednesday, following a 8-1 loss to the Cardinals the previous day. In those games, the Rangers managed just nine hits combined, with Marcus Semien providing two of them.
"We need to get our bats going and apply more pressure," Bochy stated after the latest loss. "Our performance has been off both offensively and defensively. We need to execute better across the board."
The Rangers have dropped five of their last six games and have yet to name a starter for Friday’s matchup.
The Red Sox, with a 4-8 record since the All-Star break, are entering the series on a high note. Rafael Devers delivered a game-winning RBI double in the 10th inning of a 3-2 win over Seattle on Wednesday, concluding a strong month where he batted .362 with six homers and 24 RBIs.
Boston ended a streak of six games allowing seven or more runs with the win, and manager Alex Cora expressed relief after the hard-fought victory. "It feels like a relief. It was a grind, and every pitch mattered," Cora said.
Boston will start right-hander Kutter Crawford (6-8, 3.60 ERA) on Friday. Crawford struggled in his last outing against the Yankees, giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings. He has a 3.75 ERA in three career appearances against Texas, including two starts.
The availability of Boston closer Kenley Jansen is uncertain due to a minor back issue he sustained during Wednesday’s game.
