Game Preview
Since the All-Star break, the Kansas City Royals’ starting rotation has showcased impressive strength, setting the stage as they aim to sweep the Chicago White Sox in a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Wacha and Brady Singer set a high bar, delivering dominant performances with Wacha striking out seven over seven scoreless innings in Friday’s 7-1 victory, and Singer mirroring the feat in Saturday’s 6-1 win.
Seth Lugo, fresh from his debut in the All-Star Game where he pitched a scoreless inning for the American League, is slated to start on Sunday. The 34-year-old right-hander holds a record of 11-4 with a 2.48 ERA this season. In his prior matchups against the White Sox this year, Lugo has gone 2-0 with a stellar 0.63 ERA, contributing to his formidable record against the AL Central foes.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro is hopeful for another strong performance from Lugo, which would extend the team’s streak of excellent starts. "It’s hard to ask for a better start to the second half," Quatraro noted, referring to the combined 14 scoreless innings from Wacha and Singer. "They both wanted to continue pitching, so they’re not too happy with me for pulling them out."
The team’s ERA stands at 3.74, a significant improvement over last year’s 5.17, which ranked 28th in the league.
The Royals’ hitters have also been in fine form, tallying 13 runs across the first two games of the series. All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has been particularly impressive, going 6-for-7 with a homer and three RBIs since the break, leading the team with a .332 batting average.
Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox seem to be continuing their struggle, further complicating their season trajectory.
