Game Preview
The Cleveland Guardians are starting to see the benefits of their investment in rookie Kyle Manzardo as they aim to complete a sweep against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.
Cleveland traded for Manzardo from the Tampa Bay Rays last year, attracted by his contact skills and disciplined approach at the plate. Despite a rocky start in the majors earlier this year, leading to a stint in Triple-A, Manzardo has recently returned with a bang, hitting his first two homers of the season for the Guardians following his recall.
"Kyle has really honed a routine that suits a designated hitter, which was new to him since he was a first baseman primarily," said Chris Antonetti, the Guardians’ president of baseball operations.
Since rejoining from Triple-A Columbus, where he hit .267 with 20 homers, Manzardo has continued to impress, adding three hits in Tuesday’s 7-1 victory over Kansas City.
The Guardians plan to keep Manzardo in the DH role, with Josh Naylor solidified as their first baseman.
"Josh is our first baseman. For now, Kyle will focus on his role as a DH," stated Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt.
Pitcher Ben Lively (11-8, 3.92 ERA) is set to start for Cleveland against Kansas City’s Seth Lugo (14-8, 3.12 ERA). Lively has had a mixed record against the Royals, while Lugo has been dominant in his past outings against Cleveland.
The Royals, currently on a seven-game losing streak, are looking to turn things around. "We’re not pressing; we’ve just faced some tough pitchers," Royals bench coach Paul Hoover remarked.
