Game Preview
The Connecticut Sun aim to secure a full-season sweep over the Indiana Fever as they prepare for Wednesday night’s matchup in Indianapolis.
The Sun previously dominated the Fever 92-71 in Caitlin Clark’s professional debut on May 14 and have since added two more wins by margins of four and 17 points.
In her initial encounters with Connecticut, Clark averaged 15.7 points per game, despite a challenging debut where she posted 20 points but turned the ball over 10 times. However, Clark has significantly improved, now averaging 18 points, 8.2 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Fever, who stand at a 14-16 record.
Although Clark ended her series of four consecutive games scoring over 20 points with a 19-point performance against the Atlanta Dream on Monday, her efforts contributed to Indiana securing its fifth win in seven games.
"We’re really coming together as a team," Clark commented. "It’s thrilling as a player to see many areas where I can still improve."
In that same game against the Dream, Clark matched the WNBA rookie record with 85 three-pointers in a season, tying Rhyne Howard’s 2022 record. Over her last nine games, Clark has been averaging 22.6 points, 10.9 assists, and six rebounds.
Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 29 points in Monday’s victory and has averaged 26.3 points over the last four games.
The Sun, who are in second place with a 22-7 record, are riding a three-game winning streak, having won eight of their last 11 matches.
Connecticut clinched a playoff berth this past Saturday following a 72-64 victory over the top-ranked New York Liberty.
"Playoffs are an entirely different challenge," stated Connecticut’s DeWanna Bonner. "We’ll tackle that when the time comes."
Recent addition Marina Mabrey scored 15 points in Saturday’s game. Acquired from the Chicago Sky just before the Olympic break, Mabrey has been adapting well, averaging 14.4 points across her first five games with the Sun, including a 24-point performance against her former team.
"I’m here to fill whatever role is necessary," Mabrey said. "Whether I come off the bench or start, my goal is to contribute to our victories."
