Game Preview

The Houston Astros are aiming to extend their road win streak to four games as they face the Boston Red Sox on Saturday for the second game of their three-game series.

Houston appears to have emerged from an early August offensive slump. After gathering 13 hits in a 6-4 win against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, the Astros exploded for 16 hits in an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox on Friday night. Their seventh inning included a crucial two-run homer by Jose Altuve, who tied the game at 3-3. The Astros then added two more runs in the same inning.

“I was just trying to put the ball in play, get a run in,” Altuve said. “I’ve been working on my power and it’s showing.”

Yainer Diaz also contributed with a two-run home run in a three-run ninth inning. Before their win on Wednesday, the Astros had scored only 19 runs in their previous eight games, six of which ended in losses.

The Astros racked up seven runs on 12 hits in just three innings against Boston’s bullpen.

Boston manager Alex Cora acknowledged the Astros’ offensive prowess, stating, "When they get hot, they get hot. They hit the ball hard early in counts and are very aggressive."

The Red Sox struggled, going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 runners on base.

For Saturday’s matchup, the Astros will start rookie right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (4-10, 5.33 ERA). Arrighetti had a standout performance in his last game, striking out a career-high 12 batters in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite a 6-game losing streak in games he’s started, he posted a 3.41 ERA in his last five outings.

Arrighetti will be making his debut against Boston.

Originally, Cooper Criswell was set to start for the Red Sox, but he was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Josh Winckowski (2-1, 3.44 ERA) will now take the mound. Winckowski, who has made five starts this season, last faced the Astros in a July 6 game where he allowed three runs in 3 2/3 innings. He has a 2.25 ERA in three career relief appearances against Houston.
