Game Preview
The Boston Red Sox will look to snap a three-game skid as they take on the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Boston has struggled defensively during this losing streak, particularly with allowing home runs. On Saturday, the Astros capitalized with four home runs in their 5-4 win, marking their highest single-game home run count since June 1. The Red Sox have now allowed 44 home runs in 20 games since the All-Star break, the most in the majors. This follows a trend from Friday’s 8-4 loss to Houston and a 8-4 defeat to Kansas City on Wednesday, where they also gave up multiple home runs.
Yordan Alvarez led the Astros’ power surge on Saturday with two of those home runs, marking his fourth multi-homer game of the season and the 19th of his career. Red Sox manager Alex Cora likened Alvarez’s hitting prowess to that of Aaron Judge and David Ortiz.
Houston’s win extended their streak to four games, during which they’ve scored 23 runs. Despite Boston’s Rafael Devers hitting a double to start the ninth inning, closer Josh Hader secured his 25th consecutive save opportunity, setting a new franchise record.
Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti set a career high with 13 strikeouts over seven innings, while Boston struck out 15 times in the loss.
For Sunday’s game, Houston’s Hunter Brown (9-7, 3.98 ERA) will start, aiming for a series sweep. Brown has pitched at least six innings in 13 of his last 14 starts and will face Boston for the first time in his career.
The Red Sox will counter with left-hander James Paxton (9-3, 4.42 ERA), making his third start for Boston since being acquired from the Dodgers on July 26. Paxton has posted a 4.35 ERA over 10 1/3 innings with the Red Sox and holds an 8-5 career record with a 3.72 ERA against the Astros.
