The Houston Texans are entering their second year in rebuilding mode and while the haul they received with the trade of Deshaun Jackson and the four prospects they selected in the first two rounds of this year’s draft was impressive, the 2022 season will be one of experimentation. They elected to wait another year to select a quarterback and decided to give David Mills a chance in 2022 knowing that the 2023 NFL draft will be stacked with promising quarterbacks. Mills was decent at best last season and his lack of arm strength and field vison makes him a commodity.
Save for WR Brandin Cooks who managed to top another 1,000 yards season in receiving, Mills simply doesn’t have any other quality receivers at his disposal. Rookie John Metchie III could alleviate things for Mills but he is recovering from a torn ACL and he is after all… a rookie. Otherwise, it’s Nico Collins, Chris Conley and TE Brevin Jordan, who have combined for less than a 1,000 yards last season. The backfield could be even worse. Rex Burkhead led the group of rushers last year with 427 yards and might still be the spearhead of the unit.
Former Colt Marlon Mack signed with the team in April but hasn’t been the same since he tore his Achilles in 2020 after rushing for 1,091 yards the year before for Indy. In fact, although healthy, Mack was inactive for the Colts after Week 8 last season. The defense was one of the worse units in the league last year and while the Texans have made moves to improve it, it will take time for the unit to gel. The appointment of Lovie Smith as Head Coach could also be construed as a minority rental to appease the delicate hiring process of the NFL. Don’t be surprised if Smith is one-and-done after this season.
While the Texans have dates with the Bears, Jets and a couple of games against the Jaguars, you could argue that beating those three teams isn’t a cinch at all. They are also scheduled to face the AFC West and NFC East. In fact, apart from the Jaguars, they will come in as underdogs in each of their other 15 games, if not all of them.

The hiring of Lovie Smith can only be associated as a marriage of convenience but certain to fail. You just don’t promote someone from the staff of a 4-13 team the year before to right the ship the following season. Teams playing the Texans will check the W before they enter the field but Houston could win a couple of games this year against a team caught napping at the wheel.
Last year’s record: 4-13
My Prediction: 2-15
