Game Preview

The Minnesota Twins, playing as visitors, hope to avert a series sweep when they face the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon. Despite holding a 2-0 lead heading into the eighth inning on Saturday, the Twins saw their bullpen falter, with Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax conceding a combined four runs, allowing the Royals to rally for a 4-2 victory.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli had confidence in his relievers, stating, “We have a two-run lead in the eighth with our two best rested and ready to go. I feel good about that.” However, Duran faced his ninth loss of the season and Jax his fifth blown save, despite their solid track records.

The Twins have struggled late in games recently, losing nine out of their last 13 games and slipping behind the Royals in the AL Central standings. They have also experienced a drop in offensive output, accumulating only five hits in Saturday’s game following a mere four in Friday’s 5-0 shutout loss.

In contrast, the Royals have mounted significant late-game comebacks, registering their 37th of the season on Saturday, the second-highest in the majors.

For Sunday’s game, right-handers Simeon Woods Richardson for the Twins and Michael Wacha for the Royals are slated to pitch. Woods Richardson aims to extend a stretch of solid starts, despite a short outing last Monday. Wacha, coming off a rare loss, seeks to continue a generally successful season highlighted by a string of effective starts.

As both teams contend for playoff spots, the outcome of Sunday’s matchup will be critical in defining their standings in the AL Central and the wild-card race.
