Game Preview
A budding rivalry takes a hit as the New Orleans Pelicans face off against the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco on Tuesday night, but Stephen Curry will be sidelined with an ankle injury, keeping him out of what was set to be another high-stakes showdown with Zion Williamson.
Curry and Williamson have only met five times out of 17 possible matchups since Williamson entered the league as the Pelicans’ No. 1 pick in 2019. Three of those encounters happened last season, where Curry dropped 42 points in a Warriors’ win in New Orleans, and Williamson led the Pelicans to two road wins with 19 and 26 points, respectively.
This season’s anticipated showdown won’t happen, as Curry strained his left ankle in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Clippers. Curry’s MRI came back clear, and he’s set for a re-evaluation on Friday. Coach Steve Kerr described the injury as “mild to moderate,” noting Curry’s history of ankle issues.
The Warriors will also be without De’Anthony Melton, who injured his back in the same game. The rookie standout Brandin Podziemski is expected to step up in Curry’s absence.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans, who opened with two wins, suffered a 125-103 loss to Portland on Sunday. They’ve been playing without newcomer Dejounte Murray, who fractured his hand in the season opener, and forward Trey Murphy III, sidelined with a hamstring injury.
With top scorers CJ McCollum (23.3 PPG) and Brandon Ingram (22.7 PPG) stepping up, Williamson has also been impactful, delivering 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists in his two games. Jordan Hawkins, the second-year guard, has emerged as a key asset, averaging 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Betting on the matchup gets interesting with both teams adjusting their lineups. The Pelicans might hold the edge with McCollum and Ingram firing on all cylinders, while the Warriors will look to rally behind a shorthanded squad.
