Game Preview

Following a challenging six-game road stint, the Boston Red Sox return home aiming for a third consecutive series victory over the New York Yankees as they kick off a three-game set this Friday night.

The historic rivalry heats up for the second time this month, following a 3-0 Red Sox shutout that sealed a series win in the Bronx on July 7. However, Boston is looking to shake off a rough 20-7 defeat to Colorado on Wednesday, which concluded a disappointing 1-5 road trip.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora bluntly described the recent performance as a "horse (expletive) game." Despite efforts from outfielder Jarren Duran, who hit his 13th homer of the season and Rafael Devers who went 3-for-3, the team struggled as starter Nick Pivetta allowed seven earned runs on ten hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

Focusing on their next challenge, the Red Sox face a Yankees team trailing the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles by two games, while Boston is 6 1/2 games behind.

"We lost," stated outfielder Rob Refsnyder. "It doesn’t matter if we win by one run or by 10 runs, winning games or losing games is all that matters. We lost."

Brayan Bello (10-5, 5.27 ERA) will start for the Red Sox, having not lost a decision since June 25 and coming off a strong performance against the Dodgers where he struck out seven over six innings. Bello, who has a 2-3 record with a 2.27 ERA in six starts against the Yankees, looks to continue his effective outings.

Boston plans to have Devers back at third base on Friday after he was shifted to designated hitter midweek due to a shoulder injury sustained during Tuesday’s game. "Obviously, (thinking) the worst, right? We’ve been through this path before," said Cora. "But he’s OK. He said he just jammed it."

The recent series with the Yankees highlighted New York rookie Ben Rice, a Massachusetts native who smashed three home runs and contributed seven RBIs in a decisive 14-4 victory on July 6.

However, like the Red Sox, the Yankees are also seeking recovery from a tough phase, including a two-game sweep by their crosstown rivals, the Mets, which ended with a 12-3 defeat on Wednesday.

As the playoff race heats up, every game becomes crucial, whether against familiar rivals like the Mets or Red Sox, or any other contender.
