Game Preview

The New York Yankees are on the verge of advancing in the American League Division Series, despite Aaron Judge continuing to struggle at the plate.

Giancarlo Stanton, whose powerful hitting has been pivotal in the Yankees’ recent success, believes Judge is due for a breakout performance, potentially in Game 4 on Thursday. “He’s definitely going to do damage — it’s just a matter of time,” Stanton said. “He’s had solid at-bats, and we’ll need him to step up.”

The Yankees can clinch a spot in the American League Championship Series with another win in this best-of-five series, but they’ve seen limited production from their star slugger. Judge, a likely MVP after hitting 58 home runs during the regular season, has struggled, going 0-for-4 with a walk in Game 3 and only 1-for-11 overall in the ALDS. His postseason performance has been subpar, hitting just .136 since the 2020 playoffs.

Despite the slump, there are signs of hope. Judge recorded the hardest-hit ball in Game 3 at 114.4 mph, but he couldn’t capitalize with runners on base.

In Game 4, the Yankees will face right-hander Michael Wacha, who managed to keep Judge hitless in Game 1 and has a strong history against him, limiting him to a combined 1-for-20 with 12 strikeouts in their encounters.

Wacha noted, “I just try to make quality pitches to a guy like that. He’s an unbelievable player who can do damage.”

The Yankees’ recent win came despite only four hits, with Stanton’s eighth-inning homer proving crucial in their 3-2 victory. Stanton also displayed his improving health with a stolen base, a significant move considering his recent injuries.

Despite their success, the Yankees left many runners on base, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. This trend could be a key factor in Game 4 as they aim to capitalize on opportunities.

The Yankees’ bullpen has been stellar this postseason, allowing just one unearned run in 13⅔ innings. They’ll look for another strong performance from ace Gerrit Cole, who was less than stellar in Game 1 but has a solid track record against the Royals.

With the stakes high, the Yankees will need both Judge and the rest of the lineup to deliver in what could be a pivotal game for their postseason hopes.
