Game Preview

Right-hander Ben Lively, consistently strong this season with more than three runs allowed in just two of his 15 starts, aims for his ninth victory as he pitches for the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians. They face the Tampa Bay Rays in the deciding game of their three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla., this Sunday.

Lively (8-4, 3.59 ERA) previously encountered the Rays back in 2018 while with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he surrendered three runs over four innings.

The Rays, meanwhile, will have right-hander Ryan Pepiot (5-5, 4.20) on the mound, seeking their seventh series win in their recent eight attempts. A victory would also bring Tampa Bay to a .500 record just before the All-Star break.

The Guardians ended a three-game skid with a 4-2 win on Saturday, thanks to rookie Jhonkensy Noel, who delivered a two-run, pinch-hit, go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. With Tyler Freeman on first, Noel, known as "Big Christmas," launched an 0-1 slider from Garrett Cleavinger 424 feet into the left-center bleachers, marking his fourth home run in just 35 at-bats since his June call-up from Triple-A Columbus.
