Game Preview
The Milwaukee Brewers are dominating the National League Central and have a chance to extend their lead further this week.
With an 11-game advantage over the second-place St. Louis Cardinals, the Brewers are set to begin a three-game series in St. Louis on Tuesday night.
Manager Pat Murphy is urging his players to stay focused on their performance rather than the standings as they aim for a consecutive division title. He likened their approach to a boxing match, emphasizing the importance of concentrating on the fight instead of checking the score.
"We’re in the middle of the fight," Murphy explained. "You don’t need to look at the scorecard. Just stay the course and try to win each round."
Milwaukee enters the series on a five-game winning streak and is enjoying their time on the field.
"We’re having fun out there," said Brewers right-hander Colin Rea. "We’re playing relaxed."
In contrast, the Cardinals are struggling, having lost six of their last seven games and facing an offensive slump. They went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position during a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, marking the 25th time this season they finished without a hit in such situations.
St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol stated, "At the end of the day, it comes down to whether we hit enough. We need to execute with runners in scoring position."
Tuesday’s matchup features two pitchers acquired in trades before the deadline. Frankie Montas (5-8, 4.86 ERA) is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts since joining the Brewers from the Cincinnati Reds. However, he is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three career starts against St. Louis.
On the other hand, Erick Fedde (8-6, 3.40) has faced challenges since joining the Cardinals from the Chicago White Sox. He is 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA since the trade, having previously allowed four runs to the Brewers in a May 31 start.
The Brewers may also welcome back reliever Trevor Megill, who has been on the injured list since July 29. The team plans to activate him after he completed a minor league rehab appearance on Sunday.
