Game Preview

One of college football’s oldest rivalries will feature a different dynamic this time, but the excitement remains high as perennial contenders clash.

No. 2 Georgia (3-0, 1-0 SEC) heads to Tuscaloosa to face No. 4 Alabama (3-0, 0-0) on Saturday, marking the 74th meeting between these SEC rivals.

For the first time since their 2003 matchup, Alabama will be without legendary coach Nick Saban, who is retiring. First-year head coach Kalen DeBoer will lead the Crimson Tide in their opening conference game of 2024.

In Saban’s last victory, Alabama dealt Georgia its most recent loss, 27-24, in last year’s SEC Championship Game. DeBoer’s new leadership aims to create its own legacy.

"This is a fresh season and a new team," DeBoer stated. "We’re focusing on the 2024 Alabama Crimson Tide, although there are lessons learned from past experiences. That’s on the players."

Through three games, DeBoer’s team has dominated, outscoring Western Kentucky, South Florida, and Wisconsin 147-26. However, against a powerhouse like Georgia, Alabama is a home underdog for the first time since 2007.

"We get to show the skeptics what we’re capable of," DeBoer said. "That’s no one’s fault; it reflects Georgia’s quality and strength as a team."

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe aims to build on his strong start, boasting an 8-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 156 rushing yards with six touchdowns.

Milroe is the last quarterback to defeat Georgia, which is on a 42-game regular-season winning streak.

"(Jalen) has significantly improved as a pocket passer," remarked Georgia coach Kirby Smart. "He’s making rhythm throws and RPO plays, showing more confidence."

For Smart, this game represents his first encounter with Alabama without Saban at the helm. Having served as Saban’s defensive coordinator from 2008-2015 and now in his ninth season at Georgia, Smart is focused on the task at hand.

"I don’t anticipate it being odd," Smart commented on the absence of Saban. "It’s just part of the natural progression. Our focus needs to be on the players and executing our game plan."

After defeating then-No. 14 Clemson and Tennessee Tech by a combined score of 82-6, Georgia narrowly edged Kentucky 14-13 on September 14.

As Georgia visits Tuscaloosa for the first time since a 41-24 defeat on October 17, 2020, Smart recognizes the significance of this matchup for his program’s future.

"Playing against a powerhouse like Alabama is a challenge," Smart said. "It’s a tremendous opportunity for our team on a national stage. It’s what recruits want when they choose Georgia — to compete in these kinds of games."

Alabama has won eight of the last nine encounters and leads the all-time series 43-26-4.
