Game Preview

The San Francisco 49ers will seek their second consecutive win of the season when they host the Arizona Cardinals in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday.

After halting a two-game losing streak with a strong 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots last week, the 49ers (2-2) look to build momentum. The Cardinals (1-3) are coming off three home games, which included a solid win against the Los Angeles Rams but recent losses to the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders.

In their latest game, Arizona suffered a 42-14 defeat to the Commanders, led by former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury, now Washington’s offensive coordinator. Arizona’s second-year coach Jonathan Gannon remains optimistic despite the setback. "We’re close but not quite there," he noted, emphasizing the need to improve on third-down conversions, both offensively and defensively.

While the Lions converted 50% of their third downs against Arizona, the Commanders had a 75% success rate. Conversely, the Cardinals struggled with a mere 11.1% conversion rate against the Lions and 36.4% against the Commanders.

The Cardinals will be buoyed by the performance of rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who has excelled with 14 receptions for 239 yards and four touchdowns over the last three weeks.

On the injury front, the 49ers received good news as tight end George Kittle (ribs) and linebacker Fred Warner (ankle) returned for limited practices after missing previous days. They, along with other players, are listed as questionable for Sunday.

The Cardinals will be missing guard Isaiah Adams (thumb) and cornerback Garrett Williams (groin), while kicker Matt Prater is questionable due to a knee injury.

San Francisco’s defensive line played a crucial role in their victory over New England, with several players recording significant sacks. As they gear up for the game, both teams look to find their footing in a competitive season.
