Game Preview

Just a week and a half ago, the Seattle Seahawks were riding high with a 3-0 record and a comfortable lead in the NFC West. However, that momentum is at risk as they prepare to host the San Francisco 49ers in a crucial Thursday night showdown.

The Seahawks (3-2) are looking to halt a two-game losing streak, having fallen to the New York Giants 29-20 last Sunday. A loss against the 49ers would leave them tied for first place in the division at 3-3, dramatically shifting the odds.

“This is a pivotal matchup for us,” said Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, who currently leads the NFL in completions, attempts, and passing yards. “We have to come ready to play against a tough divisional rival.”

Seattle nearly staged a comeback against the Giants but saw a potential game-tying field goal attempt blocked and returned for a touchdown. Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining focus throughout the game, not just in critical moments.

The Seahawks aim to get their ground game back on track after running backs Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet combined for only seven carries in the previous game. Seattle has relied heavily on the pass, throwing the ball on an NFL-high 67.4% of their plays.

“It’s clear we need to run the ball more effectively,” said Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald. “Everyone knows it, and we need to create opportunities to establish that aspect of our offense.”

Meanwhile, the 49ers, who have historically dominated NFC West matchups, have faced challenges of their own. After blowing fourth-quarter leads against both the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals, they are desperate for a turnaround.

“We can’t dwell on our past mistakes; we need to move forward and focus on this next challenge,” said All-Pro tackle Trent Williams.

San Francisco’s offense has struggled without star running back Christian McCaffrey, who is out due to Achilles tendinitis. The team has been ineffective in the red zone, ranking 29th in the league for converting red-zone drives into touchdowns.

“It’s early, and we’re still trying to find our rhythm,” said 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. “We’re close to figuring things out.”

With kicker Jake Moody sidelined due to an ankle injury, the 49ers signed Matthew Wright to fill the gap. They also face injury concerns with key players like cornerback Charvarius Ward and wide receiver Chris Conley listed as questionable.

The Seahawks have lost five consecutive matchups against the 49ers, including a playoff game, marking their longest losing streak in this rivalry. With both teams needing a win to bolster their playoff aspirations, the stakes are high for this primetime clash.
