Game Preview

Michigan, after suffering two losses and navigating multiple quarterback changes, faces an even tougher stretch following last week’s bye. The defending national champs have four Top 25 teams remaining on their schedule, including a road trip to No. 22 Illinois this Saturday in Champaign.

No. 24 Michigan (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) is coming off a 27-17 defeat at Washington on Oct. 5. First-year coach Sherrone Moore benched quarterback Alex Orji during that game after replacing original starter Davis Warren, who struggled with turnovers.

Backup Jack Tuttle, who began his career at Utah and transferred to Michigan after four years at Indiana, stepped in, going 10-for-18 for 98 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Now healthy after an elbow injury, Tuttle will start against Illinois.

“They call him Uncle Jack," Moore said, referencing Tuttle’s veteran experience. "He’s seen it all and done it all."

On the other side, Illinois (5-1, 2-1) has no quarterback controversy. Luke Altmyer has thrown for 1,426 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just one interception this season, showing significant improvement from his 2023 campaign.

Illinois is coming off a dramatic 50-49 overtime win against Purdue last weekend, and coach Bret Bielema is focused on preparation, noting that the team prepares for opponents like Michigan all year long.

Despite Michigan’s six-game winning streak in this series, Illinois looks to avenge a close 19-17 loss in Ann Arbor two years ago and continue their strong start to the season.
