Game Preview

Anthony Davis is off to a red-hot start, posing a tough challenge for the Detroit Pistons as the Los Angeles Lakers head to Detroit on Monday. Averaging 31.8 points and 12.0 rebounds over six games, Davis has a strong history against the Pistons, posting his career-best 28.3 points per game across 19 matchups with Detroit.

In the Lakers’ recent 131-125 win over Toronto, Davis delivered 38 points and 11 rebounds, notching at least 30 points in all four of the Lakers’ wins this season. After back-to-back losses, Davis emphasized the team’s urgency to win, saying, “We need to win games…we’re very capable of putting pressure on ourselves.”

LeBron James has also started strong, averaging 22.2 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.7 rebounds, while shooting an impressive 49.5% from the field and 44.1% from deep. He contributed 27 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds against the Raptors, noting, “We took two steps forward.”

The Lakers hold a seven-game winning streak against the Pistons, whose last win over L.A. was in January 2021. Detroit, playing the second of a back-to-back, rallied on Sunday to defeat the Brooklyn Nets 106-92, outscoring them 54-35 in the second half. Tobias Harris highlighted Detroit’s potential, adding 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while Jalen Duren posted a standout performance with 13 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Cade Cunningham scored 19 points, though he also had seven turnovers.

Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised his team’s gritty play and ball-sharing, calling the win an "identity game." Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell is listed as questionable for Monday with a foot contusion, which could impact the Lakers’ lineup.
