Game Preview
Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t overly focused on his team’s undefeated start.
“We’ve got 76 games to go,” he said. “We’re nowhere near where we need to be to achieve big goals, so while it’s nice, we’re not satisfied.”
With a 6-0 record—their best start since relocating from Seattle in 2008—the Thunder aim to extend their streak Monday night against the visiting Orlando Magic.
Oklahoma City ranks mid-league in offensive rating, averaging 112.5 points per 100 possessions after finishing third last season. However, they’re leading the NBA defensively, allowing just 95.1 points per 100 possessions, well below the league’s second-best defensive rating of 101.
Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 26.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.8 steals across six games, doubling his three-point attempts to 7.2 per game this season.
The Thunder have dominated by an average of 17.7 points, with no game closer than 12. They’re coming off a 105-92 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday and begin a stretch with seven of their next eight games at home.
Meanwhile, Orlando is struggling after losing top pick Paolo Banchero to a torn oblique last Wednesday. Banchero, selected just before Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren in the 2022 NBA Draft, will be re-evaluated in four to six weeks.
The Magic’s losing streak hit three with a 108-85 defeat to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. They are 0-1 on the second night of back-to-backs and Monday’s game marks the fourth of a five-game road trip.
In Banchero’s absence, second-year forward Jett Howard saw extended play, logging a career-high 22 minutes in Sunday’s game.
“Jett brought great energy,” said Magic coach Jamahl Mosley. “But we need to step up defensively.”
The Magic may also miss Wendell Carter Jr., who exited Sunday’s game with a plantar fascia strain after playing just nine minutes.
This will be the first of two matchups between the Thunder and Magic this season. Oklahoma City swept their games last year, and Orlando hasn’t won in OKC since early in the 2020-21 season.
