Game Preview

The San Antonio Spurs are hoping that a return to their home court and a focus on fundamental play will energize their depleted roster when they face the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night.

The Trail Blazers arrive in San Antonio following a strong 118-100 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday, kicking off a road back-to-back. Anfernee Simons led Portland with 24 points, while Dalano Banton scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, sparking a 39-18 run to erase a three-point deficit. "We needed a boost offensively, and Banton delivered," coach Chauncey Billups said. Banton’s late-game scoring also impressed on Saturday against Phoenix.

DeAndre Ayton added 19 points and 13 rebounds, and both Jerami Grant and Toumani Camara contributed 16 points each, helping Portland snap a two-game losing streak. Thursday’s matchup marks the third game of a four-game road trip that concludes Friday in Minnesota.

The Spurs, meanwhile, return home after a tough 127-100 loss in Houston on Wednesday. Led by Victor Wembanyama’s 15 points, San Antonio struggled to gain traction, committing 19 turnovers and trailing by a large margin at halftime. “We weren’t as physical or focused on the fundamentals,” said interim coach Wyatt Johnson.

This will be the Spurs’ fourth game without coach Gregg Popovich, who is on indefinite leave due to a health issue. Additionally, guard Jeremy Sochan is out with a broken thumb, joining teammates Devin Vassell (hand) and Tre Jones (ankle) on the injury list.

Thursday’s game launches a five-game homestand for San Antonio, with nine of their next 11 games at Frost Bank Center through the end of November, providing a crucial opportunity for the Spurs to regroup on home turf.
