Game Preview
Tensions will run high when No. 3 Texas takes on historic rival Arkansas in a highly anticipated Southeastern Conference matchup on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Longhorns have climbed to their highest ranking in years, now sitting at No. 3 in the College Football Playoff standings—a position they last held before their CFP semifinal against Washington in December 2023.
This marks the first SEC showdown between these two storied programs but their 80th overall meeting, with Texas leading the series 56-23. Most of those clashes date back to their days in the now-defunct Southwest Conference. However, Arkansas has won the last two encounters, including a dominant 41-20 win in Fayetteville in 2021.
"Arkansas hates us—I don’t know what Darrell Royal did to them, but the rivalry is real," said Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, recalling the intensity of their last trip to Fayetteville.
The Longhorns (8-1, 4-1 SEC) enter the game after a resounding 49-17 win over Florida. Texas jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead, racking up 353 yards to Florida’s 138 in the first half. Quarterback Quinn Ewers threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns, while Jerrick Gibson added 100 rushing yards and a score.
Texas has excelled on the road, with nine consecutive true road wins dating back to 2022. Sarkisian credits the team’s focus and resilience: "Our culture and poise on the road have been key to our success."
Arkansas (5-4, 3-3 SEC) had a bye last week, following a tough 63-31 loss at Ole Miss. Quarterback Taylen Green is expected to return after a knee injury, along with running back Ja’Quinden Jackson, who has missed two games with an ankle issue. Coach Sam Pittman emphasized the importance of a renewed effort against Texas, saying, "We’ve got to play with intensity and heart to have a chance."
With Texas’ explosive offense and Arkansas eager to bounce back at home, Saturday’s game promises to deliver high-stakes drama in this revived rivalry. For bettors, the focus will be on whether Texas can maintain its road dominance or if Arkansas pulls off another home upset.
