Game Preview

The Washington Commanders look to leverage their extended rest to rebound when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a key NFC East matchup.

Commanders Eyeing Momentum After Mini Bye

Washington (7-4) sits second in the NFC East and hasn’t played since a 26-18 loss to the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 14. Meanwhile, the Cowboys (3-7) are reeling after a fifth straight defeat, a 34-10 blowout against the Houston Texans on Monday night.

The extra days off gave rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders a chance to reset after consecutive tough losses.

“It was a great opportunity to recharge and refocus,” Daniels said. “I’m ready to get back on the field and execute.”

The offense, however, needs improvement. Over the past four games, Washington has averaged just 22.5 points per game, down from 31.1 over the season’s first seven weeks.

Cowboys Searching for Answers

Dallas faces an uphill battle as significant underdogs after losing their last five games by a combined 172-70. Their minus-11 turnover differential is among the worst in the NFL, and their defense ranks near the bottom in both yards allowed (365.7) and points allowed (29.3) per game.

“We’ve got to clean up the execution and coaching,” said Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy. “We’re making too many mistakes in key moments.”

Quarterback Cooper Rush will make his third consecutive start for Dallas, coming off a 354-yard performance against Houston. Despite his solid play, slow starts have plagued the Cowboys, scoring first in just three of their 10 games this season.

Key Injuries Impacting the Matchup

Dallas gets a boost with the return of All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland, but several key players remain sidelined. Right guard Zack Martin (ankle/shoulder) and cornerback Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) are out, as are tight end Jake Ferguson (concussion) and wide receiver Brandin Cooks (knee). Defensive end Marshawn Kneeland (knee) is questionable.

The Commanders will be without cornerback Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) and list several players as questionable, including linebacker Nick Bellore (knee) and kicker Austin Seibert (hip).

Betting Outlook

With the Commanders favored by double digits, bettors may focus on Washington’s ability to exploit Dallas’ turnover struggles. The Cowboys’ shaky defense makes them a risky pick, even against the spread. Meanwhile, the Commanders’ consistent offense and the added rest give them a clear edge to cover and possibly dominate outright.
