Game Preview

Iowa State heads into Thursday’s rivalry showdown against Iowa as a team on fire, winning four straight and covering spreads with ease. The No. 3 Cyclones (7-1) recently dismantled Jackson State 100-58, riding the momentum from a double-digit win over then-No. 5 Marquette. With a balanced scoring attack, including Curtis Jones’ 19-point performance off the bench, Iowa State remains a tough team to slow down.

Coach T.J. Otzelberger credits the team’s depth, saying, “We have a lot of guys who can score the ball, and it’s great to see them gaining confidence.” The Cyclones shot 50.7% from the field in their last game and had five players hit double figures, a trend bettors should watch as they head into a hostile environment in Iowa City.

Iowa (7-2), meanwhile, comes off a narrow 85-83 road loss to Michigan. Despite the defeat, the Hawkeyes showed resilience, rallying from double-digit deficits in both halves. Payton Sandfort led the charge, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the second half, including a game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds. But Iowa’s free-throw woes (66% on the season) and lack of bench depth due to injuries to Seydou Traore and Cooper Koch could spell trouble.

Coach Fran McCaffery praised his team’s fight but acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly at the charity stripe. “Foul shooting has been an issue, and we need to keep working on it,” McCaffery admitted.

The Hawkeyes have won four straight at home against Iowa State, holding a 48-29 edge in the all-time series. However, they’ll look to bounce back from a 90-65 drubbing in Ames last year. Bettors should note that Iowa’s inconsistent free-throw shooting and defensive lapses might make it tough to keep up with Iowa State’s high-powered offense.

Prediction: Iowa State’s depth, efficient shooting, and recent dominance make them the play here. The Cyclones should cover as road favorites, with their ability to overwhelm Iowa’s defense and capitalize on the Hawkeyes’ free-throw struggles. Look for Iowa State to control the tempo and extend their win streak to five.
