Game Preview

It wouldn’t be shocking to see Buffalo and Detroit clash again in February, but first, they’ll meet in a Sunday showdown with serious playoff implications and potential Super Bowl vibes. Bettors should brace for a high-scoring affair, as both offenses are among the league’s elite.

The Bills (10-3) are coming off a crushing 44-42 loss to the Rams, snapping their seven-game win streak. Despite a historic performance by quarterback Josh Allen—who became the first player in NFL history to post three passing and three rushing touchdowns in a single game—Buffalo’s defense collapsed. The Rams racked up 457 yards of offense, scored on five of six red-zone trips, and faced zero sacks or turnovers from the Bills’ defense.

Coach Sean McDermott emphasized the need to return to “fundamental football,” but bettors should question if Buffalo can turn it around quickly. Facing a Lions offense averaging a league-best 32.1 points per game, the Bills’ defense will need a massive improvement to contain Detroit’s red-hot attack.

Meanwhile, Detroit (12-1) is riding an 11-game winning streak, its longest in franchise history. The Lions edged the Packers 34-31 in their last outing and have had extra rest to prepare. Quarterback Jared Goff, a legitimate MVP candidate, has been on fire, throwing nine touchdowns to just one interception in his past four games. Coach Dan Campbell dismissed MVP talk, saying Goff’s focus remains on leading his team to victory.

Buffalo’s offense, ranked second in scoring at 30.5 points per game, might keep pace with Detroit. However, they’ll need to get running back James Cook more involved after he logged just six carries for 20 yards against the Rams. Expect Cook to be a key factor in Sunday’s game plan, as the Bills try to establish balance against Detroit’s improving defense.

Injuries could play a role in shaping this matchup. The Lions are getting healthier, with defensive linemen Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike, and D.J. Reader potentially returning. Offensive tackle Taylor Decker (knee) also practiced fully, while linebacker Trevor Nowaske (concussion) is the only player ruled out.

The Bills, however, are still dealing with key absences. Tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) is likely to return, but cornerback Rasul Douglas (knee) is out. Buffalo’s banged-up secondary could struggle to contain Goff and the Lions’ high-powered passing game.

Betting Insights and Prediction:
With both teams boasting elite offenses, the over is a tempting play. Detroit’s edge at home and their ability to finish games gives them a slight advantage. The Lions’ defense is healing, and they’ve shown they can perform under pressure. Take Detroit to cover the spread and lean toward the over in what could be a shootout.
