North Texas Mean Green – A Historic Run and a Ground Game Revival
The North Texas Mean Green are off to their best start since 1959, and Denton is buzzing with playoff-level energy. Sitting at 5-0 and knocking on the door of the Top 25, head coach Eric Morris’ team is determined to prove that the hype is real.
Unlike previous years when the Mean Green relied heavily on their aerial attack, this squad has been pounding opponents on the ground. Running backs Makenzie McGill II and Caleb Hawkins have become a nightmare for defenses, combining for over 600 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns through five games. Hawkins, in particular, has been nearly unstoppable, averaging almost nine yards per touch and keeping defenses guessing every snap.
Morris knows his team has earned this stage, but he’s preaching focus over flash. If North Texas can maintain its balanced attack and avoid costly turnovers, the Mean Green could finally notch that signature win to announce themselves as a legitimate American Conference contender.
South Florida Bulls – Ground Power Meets Growing Confidence
South Florida’s resurgence has been one of the early storylines of the college football season. Back in the Top 25 at 4-1, the Bulls are playing with swagger, but they’re still chasing consistency. Dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown is at the center of it all, leading the team in both rushing (282 yards) and passing (1,194 yards, 10 TDs).
USF’s 54-26 dismantling of Charlotte showed how explosive this offense can be, especially when the ground game clicks. The Bulls rushed for over 400 yards last week, with Brown slicing through defenders and four running backs each contributing over 125 yards this season.
Still, head coach Alex Golesh wants more killer instinct. After jumping to a 26-0 lead last week, the Bulls got sloppy, committing four turnovers and letting the 49ers hang around. Against an undefeated North Texas squad, any lapse could be costly.

With two high-powered offenses and shaky defenses, expect plenty of scoring and lead changes. North Texas’ home-field edge and ground dominance make them the smarter play in what should be a wildly entertaining shootout.
