Maryland Terrapins: Rolling Into Vegas With Duct Tape and Determination
Maryland did not just survive UNLV on Monday, they crawled across the finish line holding their collective breath and praying the basketball gods would not strike again. Somehow the Terrapins escaped with a 74 to 67 win despite looking like they were trying to perform experimental abstract art with their 15 first half turnovers.
The biggest plot twist came from Pharrel Payne, who appeared to be done for the season after being stretchered off against Marquette. Then Monday arrived and Payne strolled in like he just came back from brunch. He poured in 20 points, grabbed eight boards and acted as if gravity and injury reports do not apply to him.
Maryland will desperately need Payne to repeat that magic because Gonzaga brings a frontcourt that treats opposing centers the way toddlers treat their sand castles. The Terps have the fight, they have the enthusiasm, but they also have a habit of having possessions that look like question marks in motion. Against Gonzaga, question marks become turnovers and turnovers become pain.
To stay competitive, Maryland needs to slow the game, value the ball, and pray Gonzaga has a surprisingly off night after eating suspicious Las Vegas hotel breakfast burritos.
Gonzaga Bulldogs: Experienced, Huge, and Apparently Immortal
The Bulldogs enter this matchup undefeated, unbothered and playing basketball like they are doing it on cheat codes. They beat No. 8 Alabama 95 to 85 by overpowering, overwhelming and generally outmuscling anything wearing a crimson jersey.
Graham Ike went for 21 points and 11 rebounds, Braden Huff added 18 and eight, and their combined interior dominance looked like a nature documentary where the narrator lowers his voice and says, This may be difficult to watch.
Gonzaga is not just big, they are synchronized. Ike knows where Huff will be. Huff knows where Ike will be. Their guards know where both of them will be. Everybody knows where they will be at all times except the defenses trying to stop them.
Add in Tyon Grant Foster dropping 21 points and seven boards, and suddenly Gonzaga feels like a team that just casually collects double digit wins for sport. They already have two victories over ranked opponents and have not once looked like they were in danger. Their only real challenge so far is trying to decide who gets to score next.
Gambling Lean and Prediction
Gonzaga being favored by 13.0 feels about right when you consider their size, depth and rhythm. Maryland has heart and Payne returning is a massive boost, but the Terrapins are walking into a brick wall with sneakers on.
The total at 157.0 suggests a fast game and Gonzaga rarely plays slow unless forced. Maryland will score enough to make it watchable, but Gonzaga will do the heavier lifting.
