Los Angeles Sparks: Defense Has Entered the Chat

For most of the season, the Sparks treated defense like those annoying terms and conditions nobody actually reads.

Then Sunday happened.

Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak by holding Portland to just 72 points in an 89-72 victory. Apparently the team discovered that preventing baskets is also part of basketball.

Nneka Ogwumike led the charge with 20 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, looking like she personally decided the ball belonged to her. Dearica Hamby chipped in 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Plum filled the box score with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals.

The Sparks now hope that defensive effort wasn’t a one-game vacation from their usual league-worst defensive rating.

Seattle Storm: Searching for Sunshine

Things have been stormy in Seattle, and not in a good weather forecast kind of way.

The Storm enter Wednesday on a six-game losing streak and remain winless against Western Conference opponents this season. Their latest setback was a 101-91 defeat against Las Vegas, proving once again that moral victories unfortunately do not count in the standings.

There are bright spots, however.

Dominique Malonga continues to impress, scoring 19 points with five rebounds despite battling foul trouble. Rookie Awa Fam added 16 points and is beginning to build chemistry with Malonga in Seattle’s young frontcourt.

The duo has potential, but right now they’re trying to assemble the furniture while the instruction manual is still being translated.

Seattle’s rebuilding process is moving forward, just perhaps not at the speed fans were hoping for.

LVSB Final Score Prediction

The Sparks finally played defense and immediately looked like a completely different team.

Coincidence? We think not.

Seattle’s offense has struggled all season, and facing a Los Angeles team that suddenly remembered how to rotate defensively is not ideal timing.

The Storm deserve credit for developing young talent, but asking a rebuilding squad on a six-game skid to stop Plum, Hamby, and Ogwumike feels a bit ambitious.

If the Sparks defend with the same energy they showed Sunday, Seattle may spend most of the night wondering whether the basket got smaller during warmups.

Final Score: Sparks 87, Storm 76
Lean: Los Angeles Sparks -6.5

Under 168.5
