Oregon has ruled the Pac-12 like no other team in recent seasons. In fact, they have six conference titles and three more championship game berths in the last 13 seasons. That includes conference titles and a finals appearance in the last three seasons.
But that came under the direction of Mario Cristobal, who departed for Miami in the offseason.
In his place -and this clearly shows a program considered among the very best- the Ducks managed to hire Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator, 36-year-old Dan Lanning.
He led a historically great defense last year, with as much NFL talent as any in recent seasons all the way to a national championship.
Now a team, that has been known for its offensive wizards leading the way, will have a defensive coach at the helm.
One player he managed to attract in the transfer portal is former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix who will reunite with his offensive coordinator when he was a freshman, Kenny Dillingham.
Between him and former five-star recruit Ty Thompson, the Ducks are hoping for a serious leap in quarterback play over what they got last year from Anthony Brown.
He’ll have a strong offensive line to play in front of, and a skilled, but untested group of receivers and running backs.
One of Lanning’s biggest recruitment successes was attracting cornerback Jahil Florence while also getting Christian Gonzalez from Colorado in the transfer portal. Someone is going to have to step in for top-five pick DE Kayvon Thibodeaux, but there is plenty of talent in the front-seven to expect that gap to be filled.

Odds to win the 2022-23 NCAA Championship: 90/1
Oregon is a long shot to win it all, but they are the only Pac-12 team to make it to the College Football playoffs in the last 13 years and they’ve done it twice.
This team is going to get tested right off the hop when they face the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs on opening weekend. A win in that game against a team going through its own roster turnover could set the stage for a dream season.
The Verdict: Worth a flyer
Odds to win the 2022 Pac-12 Conferences: +275
Oregon is the third favorite to win the conference, tightly bunched with USC and Utah. They get to face the Utes at home in their second to last game of the season and USC is not on the schedule. The schedule is in their favor to at least make another trip to the championship game.
The Verdict: Worth a bet
2022 Regular Season Win Total: Over 8½ (-160)
In spite of the run of success, Oregon would have only covered this total in two of the last five full seasons (not counting the 2020 Covid shortened season).
But looking at their schedule and their talent, this team will be disappointed if they are not a double digit winner in the regular season. Georgia of course is a huge challenge and Utah likely will be as well and Washington is often dangerous. But Oregon hired Lanning to help beat the teams they should on their schedule and compete with the very best in the country.
The Verdict: Over (best bet)
2022 Heisman Contenders: Bo Nix 100/1
Nix has Heisman level talent that was never quite realized with Auburn. He’s a real longshot this year and the lack of experience among his receiver group makes him a real question mark. But if you’re a believer in Oregon getting to the final four, -or being a top-ten team- then it’s likely with a player like Nix finding an enhanced level of play.
The Verdict: Worth a flyer
