Despite finishing in third place in the AFC West, the Los Angeles Chargers came within a field goal or a tie away of nabbing a trip to the playoffs. They lost a thriller in overtime against the Las Vegas Raiders to deny them of a trip to a wild card spot. Nevertheless, it was a positive season for the Chargers and their offseason was also productive with numerous arrivals ready to make their mark for their new team. The Chargers already had a solid foundation before quarterback Justin Herbert was selected sixth overall a couple of seasons ago. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams form one of the best receiving duos in the NFL and RB Austin Ekeler is a dual-threat that can’t be ignored.
Herbert finished second to Tom Brady with 5,014 yards passing and was third in touchdowns with 38 scores. Plus, the Chargers may have one of the best offensive lines in the league after greatly improving the unit this year which could help Herbert dominate the league with his passing. Apart from Allen and Williams, the Chargers could use some speed at the position and Jalen Guyton could be an option while TE Gerald Everett – who was signed for two years in March – could bolster a receiving corps that is absolutely loaded with talent. WR Joshua Palmer showed promise in his rookie season and should be a factor.
The Chargers addressed their defensive woes in the offseason by trading for two superstars in DE Khalil Mack and CB J.C. Jackson. Mack is 31 but a fresh start on the West Coast could reboot his career. The Chargers also took three DBs in the draft which will allow star Derwin James Jr. to be more of a playmaker near the line of scrimmage. Just days ago, James signed a four-year deal that will make him the highest paid safety in NFL history. While James was doing the heavy lifting in the secondary, DE Joey Bosa was in charge of the defensive line and Mack’s addition could loosen Bosa’s incredible sacking ability.
Playing in the AFC West is always a challenge with Kansas City and Las Vegas in the mix of opponents. However, they do get to quarrel with the Jaguars, Texans, Seahawks and the Falcons in 2022.

The Bottom Line:
The Chargers added key pieces on the offense line and bolstered their defense without losing barely anyone of note in the offseason. With better protection and an elite receiving corps, Herbert is basically set for a career-year. Indeed, the Chargers have all the tools in place to take over as the elite in the AFC West.
