To say that the Carolina Panthers haven’t been consistent the past three years is quite alarming. The team has won exactly five games in each of their past three season and that, is disturbing. Head coach Matt Rhule is surprisingly still around but the former college coaching star will be on a short leash if he doesn’t turn things around with a winning season. The Panthers struggled at the quarterback position and the line that protect whoever took the snaps. After winning his first three games for the Panthers, Sam Darnold seemed to be the answer then suddenly, the wheels came off and was eventually benched for Cam Newton, who didn’t fare much better. Darnold regained his starting status but went on to lose his last three games.
The Panthers tried hard to land Deshaun Watson in the offseason but lost out to Cleveland. Ironically, four months later, the Panthers traded a conditional fourth-rounder for then Brown starter Baker Mayfield. While the former first overall pick brings a big arm and fighter attitude, much of the offense will depend on running back Christian McCaffrey. If the Stanford product stays healthy, he will find that he and Mayfield may enjoy much better blocking in front of them. The offensive line received an overhaul this offseason with G Austin Corbett and C Bradley Bozeman joining the unit. The largest boost was at left tackle with the 6th overall pick in the draft when Carolina selected Ikem Ekwonu. The NC State product will fill the largest hole Carolina had on its roster.
With much better blocking, the Panthers’ receivers stand to benefit for Mayfield will have more time in the pocket to find them. Along with McCaffrey, who is as dangerous up-field as in the backfield, D.J. Moore should have no problem breaking the 1,200 yards plateau while Robbie Anderson should be called upon more than his 53 catches last season. While the Panthers struggled to pass in 2021, their defense did well to stop it. The primary reason was Carolina’s great pass rush which finished in the top-10 of pressure rate. Much of the unit is back led by a young core of Pro Bowler DE Brian Burns, S Jeremy Chinn and C Donte Jackson. Veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson is a tackling machine and one of the team’s leaders.
The Panthers have a tough schedule with non-divisional opponents including the Rams, 49ers, Bengals, Ravens, Broncos, Cardinals and play the Buccaneers twice this year. However, don’t be surprised if they sneak out a few wins against those powerhouses.

The Bottom Line:
With Mayfield under center, a healthy McCaffrey and a much-improved offensive line, the Panthers should be able to put far more points on the board than they have over the past years. But it is their defense which could be a game-changer. The Panthers have a real chance of making some noise but with a tough schedule and health issues that seems to plague them, they will come up just short of a playoff spot yet will finish with a winning season.
