Game Preview

The Kansas City Royals will rely on right-hander Brady Singer to maintain his strong second-half form as they begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Since the All-Star break, Singer (8-6, 2.88 ERA) has been in top form, winning three consecutive starts. He has pitched seven innings in each game, yielding only three runs on 13 hits and four walks, with 16 strikeouts.

“The two-seamer was really effective,” Singer said after his shutout performance against the Chicago Cubs on July 26. “It had great movement, and that pitch was key for me tonight.”

Singer has also incorporated a sweeper into his arsenal, adding a new element to his pitching.

“I think the pitches are well-placed,” he said. “Using the sweeper more frequently since the All-Star break has been beneficial. It provides a different look compared to my slider.”

Singer’s confidence in his sinker has enhanced his effectiveness against left-handed batters.

In his career against the Red Sox, Singer is 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA. In his most recent start against Boston on July 14 at Fenway Park, he struggled, allowing four runs on eight hits in just under three innings in a 5-4 defeat.

Left-hander James Paxton (8-3, 4.52) has struggled to go beyond five innings in his last six starts, posting a 6.67 ERA and giving up 34 hits and 16 walks in 27 innings.

The Red Sox are hopeful Paxton, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline, can bounce back after a poor showing in his return to the Boston rotation. Paxton allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits over 4 1/3 innings in his recent start against the Seattle Mariners.

“Paxton has a good fastball and breaking ball,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We didn’t support him well defensively.”

Paxton is 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA in nine career starts against the Royals. His last outing against Kansas City on Sept. 1, 2023, resulted in a loss, as he allowed six runs on five hits in just four outs, with homers from Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez contributing to the damage.

Since the All-Star break, the Red Sox offense has been explosive, scoring six or more runs in 11 of 15 games, led by Jarren Duran. The All-Star Game MVP has hit in 16 of his last 17 games, batting .403 with 16 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs. His solo homer in the fifth inning on Sunday helped the Red Sox secure a 7-2 victory over the Rangers.

Duran is a key player in Boston’s emerging young core.
