It was a dream season for the Utah State Aggies in 2021-22 as new coach Blake Anderson helped them capture their first Mountain West Conference championship after nine seasons in the group. The Aggies then put the exclamation on the year by beating Oregon State in the LA Bowl, just the fourth bowl win in school history.
They did it on the strength of one of the best passing attacks in the nation and the team simply gelled once October came. They went 8-1 down the stretch, they allowed 17 points or less in five of their last six games and scored 35 or more points in five of their last seven.
QB Logan Bonner set five school passing records last season, including 36TDs and 3,628 yards and they’ll need him to be great again as the team lost three of its top receivers. The departed combined for 31TDs and 3,328 receiving yards.
On the plus side, the entire offensive line returns, and part of the players coming in include Alabama WR transfer Xavier Williams and Maryland WR Brian Cobbs.
The defense lost some key linebackers, but DE Byron Vaughns who was a wrecking ball down the stretch returns to anchor the defense along with LB/Safety Hunter Reynolds.
There’s a lot of continuity both on the field and among the coaching staff to build upon their record setting season.

On the plus side, game two of their season will be at Alabama, so if they can shock the nation with a win there and run the table, they do conceivably have a shot at making the final four. Still, that seems highly unlikely at best.
Verdict: Skip it
Odds to win the 2022 Mountain West Conference: +900
They’ll be hard pressed to repeat as champs with a retooled Boise State and a strong Air Force team in their division. Their schedule also includes a tough matchup with BYU, but there is plenty of value at these odds for an experienced team with a ton of QB talent to repeat.
Verdict: Worth a small investment
2022 Regular Season Win Total: Under 7 (-130)
The path to at least eight wins is there if they can earn at least a split in their first two games against Power 5 schools, UConn (where they’ll be favorites) and Alabama. They’ll likely be favorites over Weber State, UNLV, Colorado State, New Mexico, Hawaii and San Jose State. That leaves needing one win from the mix of BYU (on the road), Air Force (at home), Wyoming (on the road) and Boise State (on the road).
Verdict: Bet the Over (best bet)
