Game Preview
Few pitchers have had as much success against Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees as Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Zach Eflin.
Eflin aims to continue his dominance when he takes the mound on Wednesday night against the visiting Yankees in the second game of a three-game series.
Eflin (5-5, 4.19 ERA) boasts a 3-1 record with a 1.54 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees, the second-lowest ERA among active pitchers with at least 25 innings against them. Only Chris Bassitt of the Toronto Blue Jays (0.82) has been more effective against the Yankees recently.
On April 20, Eflin pitched six shutout innings against New York but didn’t factor in the decision as the game remained scoreless until Tampa Bay won 2-0 in 10 innings.
In his last three starts against the Yankees dating back to August 1, Eflin has allowed just two runs over 18 innings, striking out 22 and walking one.
"I pretty much treat every team the same," Eflin said after his latest outing against New York. "Just go out there, be competitive, and see where it takes you."
Eflin has also effectively handled Judge, who is just 1-for-12 with eight strikeouts against him, including six consecutive strikeouts dating back to August 25.
"Make sure he doesn’t make contact with the ball," Eflin said of his strategy against Judge. "That’s really the game plan the entire time facing him."
Eflin won his most recent start against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, despite allowing six runs (five earned) and seven hits over five-plus innings, benefiting from ample run support in a 10-8 victory.
