Game Preview
One day after suffering their worst defeat of the year, the Los Angeles Dodgers aim to recover in the last game of a four-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday in Phoenix.
Arizona is looking to even the series after a dominant 14-3 victory on Sunday, where they produced 17 hits. The win, highlighted by Randal Grichuk’s three-run homer during an eight-run second inning and Eugenio Suarez’s homer and two RBIs, ended their three-game losing streak and closed their gap with the division-leading Dodgers (82-55) to five games.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts took out key players Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and Teoscar Hernandez early in the game due to the substantial deficit. The decision allowed rookie starter Justin Wrobleski, who gave up 10 runs, to take the brunt of the loss over 5 1/3 innings, preserving the bullpen.
"We were in a tough spot today, trying to preserve our bullpen," Roberts explained. "The upside is we’re fully ready for tomorrow, hoping to clinch the series."
Arizona’s manager Torey Lovullo felt Sunday’s game was crucial. "It wasn’t exactly a must-win, but it was incredibly important," Lovullo stated. "We’re aware of the standings but focusing on our game execution was key today."
For the series finale, Los Angeles will start right-hander Jack Flaherty (10-6, 3.07 ERA), who gave up three runs and two homers over six innings in his last start against the Baltimore Orioles. Since joining the Dodgers from Detroit, Flaherty has posted a 3-1 record and a 3.49 ERA in five starts.
Joc Pederson has been successful against Flaherty, with a .353 average and two homers in 17 at-bats. Flaherty has a mixed record against Arizona, holding a 1-2 record and a 4.41 ERA over six starts.
On the mound for Arizona will be Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0, 5.06 ERA), making his fifth start of the season after a prolonged shoulder injury absence. He allowed five runs in his last outing against the New York Mets, spanning 5 1/3 innings.
Teoscar Hernandez has historically performed well against Rodriguez, batting .381 with three homers. Rodriguez has struggled against Los Angeles overall, with a 1-3 record and a 5.85 ERA in his career.
The Diamondbacks are also monitoring outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who left Sunday’s game with calf tightness and is currently day-to-day.
Right fielder Corbin Carroll continues to impress, extending his streak of reaching base to 40 consecutive starts, a new franchise record. "My aim is to contribute to our wins daily," Carroll said after going 2-for-4 with an RBI on Sunday. "It’s gratifying to be in a position to help the team consistently."
