Game Preview
The Philadelphia Phillies have been cautiously managing Ranger Suarez since he returned from the injured list last month.
A promising matchup against the Rays might be just what Suarez needs as he is set to pitch in the ongoing three-game series against Tampa Bay this Tuesday.
After dealing with lower back soreness, Suarez (12-6, 2.90 ERA) came back in late August. In the three starts following his return, he has maintained a 3.21 ERA, although he hasn’t pitched beyond five innings in any of those games.
His last outing on Thursday against the Miami Marlins saw him pitching five shutout innings on just 82 pitches, allowing only three hits, earning him the win.
"He’s the same reliable Ranger," said Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott. "Even when he’s off his sinker, he’s got a whole arsenal at his disposal. He’s smart about reading the batters and knows just what to throw… It’s great having him back on the mound."
Suarez’s next challenge will be a struggling Tampa Bay lineup, which has scored two runs or fewer in three out of its last four games. Their sole run during Monday’s 2-1 loss to Philadelphia came from a pinch-hit homer by Brandon Lowe in the ninth inning, which was almost snagged by Johan Rojas.
Phillies closer Carlos Estevez, who gave up the game-tying home run and later took a line drive to his knee, may not be available for Tuesday’s game.
"It’s a knee contusion," explained Phillies manager Rob Thomson. "He’s currently being evaluated, and we expect he might be a bit sore tomorrow."
The Phillies (86-58) snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat Monday when Kody Clemens hit a game-winning single in the ninth, allowing Bryce Harper to score and averting a potential third consecutive loss after a rough weekend against the Marlins.
"Every win counts, but bouncing back like this after Sunday’s disappointment is key," Thomson remarked. "It shows the resilience of this team, and winning in front of our home crowd could really help swing momentum back in our favor."
For the Tuesday game, Tampa Bay (71-73) will start Taj Bradley (6-10, 4.40 ERA), who is winless in his last seven starts despite a solid performance last Thursday. He went seven innings against the Twins, giving up just two early home runs before settling down.
"Those early homers can get to you, but I focused on not letting them define the outing," Bradley said. "Avoiding those big innings has been a goal, and I managed to do that."
Bradley will need to be cautious of Kyle Schwarber, the Phillies powerhouse who’s been on a tear with six homers over his last seven games and hits in every game this month.
