Game Preview

As the Cleveland Guardians edge closer to locking in a postseason spot, the Minnesota Twins are battling to maintain their playoff standing.

The Twins aim to even the ongoing series and boost their playoff hopes when they face Cleveland and the formidable Tanner Bibee on Wednesday.

Following a narrow 4-3 defeat in the series opener, Minnesota (80-71) secured a 4-1 win Tuesday. Key hits from Matt Wallner and a pivotal two-run homer by Willi Castro in the eighth inning sealed the victory.

"Always go out there, trust yourself and enjoy the game," Castro remarked to Bally Sports North.

Despite a rocky stretch since mid-August, the Twins cling to a 1 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers for the last AL wild-card slot.

"Everyone’s aware of the standings," stated Minnesota pitcher Pablo Lopez. "We can’t let that give us self-inflicted pressure."

Cleveland (87-65) is on the cusp of clinching a playoff spot by series’ end.

Bibee (11-8, 3.60 ERA) has been a challenge for Minnesota, boasting a 1.50 ERA and 22 strikeouts across three starts against them this year, although he’s hit a rough patch lately, going 1-3 with a 4.88 ERA in his last five starts. On Friday, Bibee gave up three runs over six innings in a loss to Tampa Bay.

"Six innings, three runs — we’ll take that 100 out of 100 times," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. "He battled through it … I think that just shows again how Tanner’s progressing and the type of pitcher that he is."

Castro, on a .313 hitting streak against Cleveland, is 3-for-9 against Bibee.

Minnesota’s Bailey Ober (12-7, 3.90 ERA), enjoying a career-best season, looks to rebound from a tough outing against Cincinnati where he surrendered five runs over almost seven innings.

Ober’s track record against Cleveland includes a mix of performances, but he threw six scoreless innings in his last matchup against them on August 9.

Jose Ramirez, on a .300 hitting streak for Cleveland, and Lane Thomas, hitting .317 this month, will be key players to watch in this critical matchup.
