Sasaki Found The Cheat Code?
The Dodgers have apparently solved baseball’s oldest mystery: “Why does everyone know what’s coming?” The answer? Roki Sasaki’s glove was apparently spilling more secrets than your friend after two margaritas.
Since swapping to a larger glove after the All-Star break, Sasaki has looked like a completely different pitcher. He fired 21 pitches at 100+ mph against the Yankees, touched a career-best 101.8 mph, then followed it up by holding the Mets to just one run over seven dominant innings. Not bad for a guy who carried a 5.33 ERA into the break.
Now sitting at 4-5 with a 4.71 ERA, Sasaki is finally looking like the flamethrower Los Angeles expected. Dave Roberts certainly likes what he’s seeing, hoping the young right-hander keeps stacking quality outings instead of handing out batting practice.
Seattle’s Road Trip From Hell
Meanwhile, Seattle arrives looking like they accidentally packed their offense in checked baggage.
The Mariners are just 2-6 since July 21 and have dropped four of six on their current road trip. Bryan Woo (7-7, 4.37 ERA) gets the ball after Bryce Miller was given an extra day off, but the timing couldn’t be much worse.
Woo was tagged for five runs over five innings by Texas in his last outing, and his road numbers are enough to make Mariners fans cover their eyes. He’s just 1-7 with a brutal 6.52 ERA away from Seattle, compared to a sparkling 6-0 record and 2.20 ERA at home. Apparently someone should consider mailing T-Mobile Park wherever he pitches.
Seattle finally scratched across two late runs Wednesday thanks to RBI hits from Cole Young and Josh Naylor, but the comeback fell short in a 4-2 loss. Young collected two of the club’s five hits, while Colt Emerson returned from back spasms but went 0-for-2 before exiting late.
Hollywood Ending?
The Dodgers bounced back nicely after dropping the opener, with Andy Pages collecting three hits and a home run while Eric Lauer dominated over six scoreless innings.
If Sasaki keeps hiding the baseball as well as he’s been hiding runs lately, Los Angeles should have the edge once again.
