Game Preview
The Arizona Diamondbacks will send Merrill Kelly to the mound on Saturday night, aiming to secure a four-game series victory against the playoff-bound Milwaukee Brewers.
Kelly (4-0, 4.00 ERA) will face off against fellow right-hander Aaron Civale (7-8, 4.48).
The Diamondbacks celebrated a 7-4 win on Friday, marking their third consecutive victory. Ketel Marte hit his career-high 33rd homer of the season, while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also contributed a solo shot in his return from the injured list. The Brewers (88-66) scored all four of their runs against starter Zac Gallen via three homers in the fifth inning.
"There were a lot of positives from tonight. We fought back," said Brewers manager Pat Murphy. "The Diamondbacks are playing exceptionally well; they’re fighting for their lives."
Arizona (86-68) has been impressive on the road, going 12-5 in their last 17 games, and is currently two games behind the San Diego Padres for the top wild-card spot in the National League. The New York Mets fell a game behind the Diamondbacks after suffering a 12-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
"I caught a glimpse of the out-of-town scoreboard while waiting for the pitchers," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo commented on the Mets’ result. "It was a quick look, and I wasn’t sure, but I got confirmation later."
"It feels good, but we have eight games left. Nothing is finalized yet. We need to keep playing our best baseball," Lovullo added. "It’s nice to win when others stumble, but we’ll enjoy this and be ready for tomorrow."
Milwaukee has lost two straight games since clinching the NL Central on Wednesday and trails the Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers by four games for the best record in the National League, which would earn them a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Kelly has gone 2-0 with a 5.17 ERA in seven starts since returning from the injured list. In his last outing on Monday, he allowed one run on two hits over six innings but received a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
In his career against the Brewers, Kelly is 3-2 with a 3.04 ERA and has a strong recent record of 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in his last five starts against them.
Civale, who joined Milwaukee from Tampa Bay in early July, boasts a 5-0 record with a 2.56 ERA over his last seven starts. In his most recent game, he allowed one run in five innings during a 6-2 win against Philadelphia on Monday.
Civale has never faced the Diamondbacks but holds a 5-2 record with a 3.68 ERA in 12 starts for Milwaukee.
"Arizona has one of the best offenses in baseball," Murphy noted. "That’s a fact."
