Game Preview

Saints quarterback Derek Carr is eager to experience the Superdome in a fresh light this Sunday.

The iconic venue, which will host its eighth Super Bowl in February, has recently been lacking the electrifying atmosphere that characterized its glory days under former coach Sean Payton and record-setting quarterback Drew Brees.

Carr faced some boos during his first season in New Orleans, as the Saints struggled through their third consecutive non-playoff year.

However, with the Saints (2-0) set to face the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) on Sunday, Carr feels a renewed energy in the air.

“We needed to show our fans that we could play better football than last year,” Carr said. “We realized that to achieve our goals, we needed the stadium to be alive. It all starts with playing well. I’m really looking forward to experiencing that atmosphere this Sunday.”

New Orleans’ surprising strong start to the 2024 season, largely credited to new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, has caught the attention of the NFL. They began with a dominant 47-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, followed by a notable 44-19 triumph against Dallas in Week 2.

“They have an explosive running back in (Alvin) Kamara, speedy wide receivers, and Derek Carr has a wealth of experience. When he’s on point, he’s tough to stop,” said Eagles coach Nick Sirianni. “They run the ball effectively, are dynamic in the passing game, and they will be a significant challenge in a hostile environment.”

Enthusiasm among fans in New Orleans, which had been lukewarm during the offseason, has surged since September 8. Tickets that were once as low as $11 in the upper deck are now priced around $200.

“It’s going to be exciting,” said Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu, a New Orleans native who was in high school during the 2009 championship season. “We’ve started strong, and you can feel the difference in the locker room and in the city. We just need to keep this momentum going.”

Nonetheless, the Saints are bracing for a determined Eagles team looking to bounce back after a 22-21 loss to Atlanta on Monday night.

“They’re coming off a tough defeat. You think they won’t come out fighting?” Carr remarked, recalling that the Eagles reached the Super Bowl two seasons ago. “We’re facing a championship-caliber team, and we need to be ready.”
