Game Preview
The Detroit Lions may not have switched divisions, but their early schedule suggests otherwise.
Detroit (2-1) narrowly defeated the Los Angeles Rams in overtime during their opener and edged Arizona 20-13 in their first road game last week.
Now, they’re set to host the undefeated Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.
Lions coach Dan Campbell acknowledges the tough challenge posed by the Seahawks (3-0), especially considering Seattle has won the last six matchups, with Detroit’s last victory dating back to 2012.
"I would be lying if I said I don’t know we’ve lost to them three years in a row," Campbell remarked. "It gets frustrating, especially after losing once, let alone three times."
While the Lions didn’t score in the second half against the Cardinals, their defense stood firm, and their offense was well-rounded. Quarterback Jared Goff completed 18 of 23 passes for 199 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs contributed 188 rushing yards.
Campbell believes his offense must be more explosive to head into the bye week with a win.
"We need to be efficient on first and second downs and win the explosive play battle," he noted.
Goff passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns against Seattle last season, but the Seahawks won 37-31 in overtime. He sees significant differences in this year’s Seahawks defense compared to last year’s.
"It’s a completely different scheme," Goff stated. "There might be a few players left, but schematically, it’s entirely new."
Seattle quarterback Geno Smith threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns against Detroit last season. He recently connected with DK Metcalf for a 71-yard touchdown pass in a 24-3 victory over Miami, while Zach Charbonnet rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker.
Metcalf has recorded back-to-back 100-yard games and worked on improving his contested catches during the offseason.
"That was a focus for me this offseason," he said, emphasizing the importance of attacking the ball.
To disrupt Seattle’s passing game, the Lions need to apply pressure on Smith. Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit’s standout defensive player, has already notched 6.5 sacks.
"We need to neutralize 97," Smith said, acknowledging Hutchinson’s strong start. "He’s a high draft pick, and they rely on him. If we can keep him from making big plays, it will be tough for their defense."
Detroit will be without starting center Frank Ragnow due to a partially torn pectoral muscle, while tight end Sam LaPorta missed Thursday’s practice with an ankle injury. Linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was out last week due to a concussion, fully practiced.
For Seattle, Walker was limited in practice on Thursday, while defensive starters Leonard Williams and linebackers Uchenna Nwosu and Jerome Baker did not participate.
