Game Preview
The Boston Celtics kick off their journey toward consecutive NBA championships on Tuesday, opening the 2024-25 season at home against the New York Knicks.
After defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games to win the 2023-24 title, Boston looks to secure back-to-back championships for the first time since 1968-69. Coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized the challenge ahead: “Just because it worked before doesn’t mean it will again. That’s the challenge.”
The Celtics return all top 11 scorers from last season’s dominant team, which posted an NBA-best 64-18 regular-season record and cruised to the franchise’s 18th championship with a 16-3 playoff run.
The New York Knicks, coming off a 50-win season and a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, fell short in the conference semifinals. They haven’t reached the conference finals since 2000 or won a championship since 1973. In the offseason, New York traded Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota for Karl-Anthony Towns and acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets.
"We can’t just focus on Boston," said Towns. "We need to find a way to beat every team in the East to achieve what this city is craving."
Bridges will join forces with Jalen Brunson, who finished fifth in MVP voting last season after averaging 28.7 points per game.
Boston’s star, Jayson Tatum, leads the team after averaging 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists last season.
The Knicks will be without centers Precious Achiuwa (hamstring) and Mitchell Robinson (recovering from ankle surgeries). Meanwhile, Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis will miss at least the first two months following leg surgery, but Boston thrived without him last season.
As the Celtics aim for another title, Coach Mazzulla remains cautious: “Every season is different. What worked before doesn’t guarantee success now."
