Game Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers remain undefeated this season, while the injury-plagued New Orleans Pelicans are simply trying to keep pace as they host Cleveland on Wednesday night.

The Cavs matched their historic 8-0 start from 1976, securing one-point and two-point wins in a recent home-and-home series against Milwaukee. Their first six victories came with an impressive average margin of 17 points. Head coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted the importance of these close games for playoff readiness, saying, “We practiced handling pressure moments and fortunately came out on top.”

In Saturday’s 114-113 win over Milwaukee, Donovan Mitchell hit a last-second jumper to seal the game, scoring 30 points overall. On Monday, though Mitchell scored only 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting, Darius Garland stepped up with 39 points, leading Cleveland on an 18-8 run to close out a 116-114 win.

“It can’t be Donovan every night,” Atkinson said. “Tonight, he recognized Darius had it going and let him take over. That’s the strength of this team — sharing the ball and trusting whoever’s hot.”

Meanwhile, the Pelicans are dealing with a depleted roster due to injuries. Brandon Ingram was the only top scorer available in their 118-100 loss to Portland on Monday, scoring 27 points. Zion Williamson and Jordan Hawkins are day-to-day, while key players like Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, and Trey Murphy III are sidelined long-term. Guard Brandon Boston Jr., signed on a two-way contract, has been taking advantage of extra minutes, averaging 16 points over the last three games.

“He’s assertive and aggressive,” said head coach Willie Green of Boston. “He’s making an impact every game and carving out his role.”

As Ingram faces constant double-teams, Boston’s offensive role is expected to grow. “He’s another guard who can create shots,” Ingram said. “He provided scoring and made good decisions on offense. I just have to stay focused, find my opportunities, and trust my teammates to make the right plays.”
