Game Preview
Marquette’s success from beyond the arc has been a hallmark since Shaka Smart took over as head coach in 2021. However, the 15th-ranked Golden Eagles have struggled with their 3-point shooting early this season. They’ll aim to regain their touch on Friday night when they face Maryland in College Park.
Marquette (3-0) shot just 10-for-36 from deep in a 70-62 victory over Central Michigan on Monday and is hitting only 29.4% of its 3-pointers through three games. Despite the slow start, Smart remains confident in his team’s shooting.
"These are shots our guys make in practice and will make in games," Smart said, addressing the missed opportunities. What concerned him more was the lack of offensive rebounds—just six against Central Michigan—which he deemed unacceptable given the number of missed shots.
Smart emphasized the need to mature and learn how to "win ugly" while capitalizing on leads. "We have to understand what it takes to step on the other team’s throat when we have a lead. Competition ramps up in our next game," he said.
That next challenge comes in the form of the undefeated Maryland Terrapins (3-0), who have won all three games by at least 30 points. Maryland’s latest victory was an 84-53 rout of Florida A&M, led by Julian Reese’s 21 points and nine rebounds. Selton Miguel, Ja’Kobi Gillespie, and Rodney Rice also contributed double-digit scoring, highlighting the team’s balanced attack.
Reese praised the Terrapins’ versatility, noting, "Anyone can have a big night. We trust each other, and if we keep playing like this, we’ll be great."
Maryland’s Rodney Rice leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game, while Gillespie and Derik Queen each average 13.7. On Marquette’s side, Kam Jones has been the standout, averaging 22.7 points, though he was held to 12 against Central Michigan. Stevie Mitchell stepped up in that game with 17 points.
The two programs have faced each other only once, with Maryland securing an 84-63 victory in December 2019. Friday’s matchup promises to be a battle of Marquette’s offensive rebound adjustments against Maryland’s dominant and balanced scoring attack, setting the stage for a must-watch game.
