Game Preview
The Utah Hockey Club aims to build momentum as they face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night, fresh off a dominant 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In that victory, Dylan Guenther shined with two goals and an assist, while Clayton Keller contributed three assists. Utah excelled on the power play, converting 3-of-4 opportunities. “It’s a big confidence booster,” Guenther said. “Good things happen when we work hard,” added teammate Nick Bjugstad, who also scored on the man advantage.
Toronto, on a three-game winning streak and boasting six wins in their last seven games, will continue to adjust without captain Auston Matthews. Sidelined with an upper-body injury, Matthews recently sought treatment in Germany. While his return is expected soon—potentially in Wednesday’s game against the Florida Panthers—his absence leaves Toronto without last season’s leading goal-scorer (69 goals). “We’re missing his leadership and everything he brings on the ice,” said William Nylander, who currently leads the team with 13 goals.
The Maple Leafs are also dealing with injuries to key forwards, including Matthew Knies and Max Domi. However, their defense-first approach under coach Craig Berube has kept them competitive. “It’s a different kind of game, but we’re adjusting well,” said defenseman Morgan Rielly.
Utah faces the challenge of back-to-back games for the first time this season. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka has been impressive, allowing just two goals in his past two games. While coach Andre Tourigny praised Vejmelka’s confidence, the heavy workload may lead to a start for backup Jaxson Stauber, recently called up from the AHL.
The Maple Leafs hold the edge at home, but Utah’s power play and Vejmelka’s strong form make this a compelling matchup for bettors.
