Game Preview

Mississippi’s football season has shifted dramatically, with national aspirations giving way to regional pride as they prepare for Friday’s Egg Bowl matchup against in-state rival Mississippi State in Oxford, Miss.

Coming off a devastating 24-17 loss to Florida, the No. 14 Rebels (8-3, 4-3 SEC) find themselves out of the College Football Playoff conversation. Once a favorite for a playoff berth, Ole Miss saw its chances plummet from 84% to just 4% following last week’s setback. Coach Lane Kiffin’s team dropped five spots in the CFP rankings, and now their focus turns to securing state bragging rights.

The Rebels entered the season with high hopes after assembling a star-studded roster bolstered by top NIL recruits and transfer portal talent. However, costly mistakes in Gainesville—three turnovers, a poor third-down conversion rate, five dropped passes, and a missed field goal—dashed their championship dreams.

“We have to focus on what’s ahead,” Kiffin said Monday. “The Friday game gives us a unique opportunity to showcase what we can do on a national stage.”

Mississippi State (2-9, 0-7 SEC) heads into the Egg Bowl seeking to avoid a winless conference season, something they haven’t endured since 2002. First-year coach Jeff Lebby faces off against his former boss, Kiffin, adding a personal edge to the rivalry. Lebby, who served as Ole Miss offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021, now leads the Bulldogs in their quest for an upset.

While Kiffin took lighthearted jabs at Lebby on social media earlier this season, the Bulldogs’ coach remains focused. “We’ve had communication during the season, but not this week,” Lebby said. “He loves to have fun online, and that’s just who he is.”

Mississippi leads the all-time series 65-46-6 and has won five of the past seven matchups, including a 35-3 blowout in 2018. Another victory for the Rebels would further cement their dominance in the rivalry and deal Mississippi State its ninth straight loss.

The game, now moved to Black Friday for a national spotlight, offers both teams a chance to end their seasons on a high note, with pride and bragging rights on the line.
