Houston Astros Betting Preview

The Astros are hobbling into their final series before the All-Star break, yet they remain slight favorites despite a three-game sweep at the hands of Cleveland. Four key bats, Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Peña, Jake Meyers, and Christian Walker are sidelined, leaving manager Joe Espada to juggle his lineup.

One bright spot? Isaac Paredes, recently named to the All-Star roster, has embraced the leadoff role, hitting .286 with four homers in a dozen games atop the order. Espada’s gamble to give him more plate appearances has paid off, especially when Houston needs offense early with so many regulars out.

On the mound, Lance McCullers Jr. (2-3, 5.82 ERA) will try to build off a bounce-back start versus the Dodgers where he gave up one run in six innings. That followed two ugly outings where he allowed 12 runs in just over eight innings. His command is still shaky, he’s walked four batters in three straight starts, but he’s trending upward.

Houston has won one of McCullers’ last three home starts, and with the Rangers’ inconsistencies, Houston should be able to control the pace if McCullers limits damage early.

Texas Rangers Betting Preview

Texas broke out offensively on Thursday with an 11-4 thumping of the Angels, continuing their dominance in Anaheim. The win brought them to 3-4 on their 10-game road swing and gave a bit of momentum heading into a rivalry clash with the Astros.

Jack Leiter (4-6, 4.32 ERA) will get the nod, hoping to halt a personal skid of six straight winless starts. He gave up two runs over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Padres last weekend and hasn’t reached the fifth inning in two of his last three outings. Against Houston earlier this year, he held his own with three earned over seven innings but took a no-decision.

Offensively, Texas has come alive, scoring 8+ runs in three straight games, and they’ll need that spark again versus Houston’s ace.

Prediction:

Despite injury concerns, the Astros have home-field edge, and McCullers has flashed signs of stability. Houston’s bullpen is in better form, and if Paredes can ignite things early, they should hold off a streaky Rangers squad.
